Description
Belle Epoque is Perrier-Jouet's prestige vintage cuvee, recognisable by its hand-painted anemone bottle, and the 2016 carries the house's Chardonnay-led, floral signature alongside Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The 2016 growing season paired a cool spring with a warm summer, giving ripe, balanced fruit. After hand-picking and traditional bottle fermentation, the wine ages several years on the lees, which builds its complexity, creaminess and fine bead while keeping the style precise.
The colour is a light gold with a fine, lively bead. The nose shows white flowers with white peach and grapefruit, and the palate is fine and precise, with elderflower, poached pear and a green, peppery edge adding depth. The mousse is delicate, and the finish is long, creamy and mineral. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits fine fish such as sea bass with citrus or lobster, and works with scallops and lightly smoked salmon. It can be cellared to develop further complexity.
