Description
Single malt Tobermory, drawn and bottled by Mc Shelfie matured to 9 year old from 2015, drawn from cask 154 and bottled at 50.9%. A release of 154 bottles. Made on the Isle of Mull, Tobermory is the unpeated single malt of the island's sole distillery. Burn Stewart revived the distillery in 1993, and Distell of South Africa bought it in 2013.
The spirit was run through the distillery's boil ball stills, to build a nutty, waxy, fruity character. A refill bourbon cask held it, keeping the fruit to the fore. Still young, it is fruity and oily with a nutty edge. The unpeated make leans on the cask, the wood adding much of the colour and flavour. Its painted home town gives the unpeated malt its name. A rare, more heavily peated make has appeared under the name Iona, after a neighbouring isle. In dry summers the distillery has paused when its hill loch ran low. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill.
At cask strength 50.9% it is muscular. A waxy, oily fruitiness, and the bourbon cask adds vanilla and a gentle honey. Beneath it run orchard fruit, wax and a soft nut. It finishes fruity, oily and warming. This is the waxy, fruity malt of Mull.
