Padre Azul Añejo is a 100% blue agave añejo and the oldest expression from Padre Azul, a brand founded by Austrian Hans Peter Eder in partnership with master distillers in Jalisco. It is double distilled in copper pot stills and aged at least one year in oak casks, past the one year class minimum, smoothing the spirit's edges so the wood and agave settle together.
The nose shows coffee, caramel, vanilla and caramelised nuts, while the palate is full and sweetly balanced, with burnt caramel, chocolate, oak, nut and espresso, lingering long on a generous finish. The presentation is as much a part of the brand as the liquid, from the heavy skull shaped stopper to the hand laced leather sleeve. It is a soft, complex añejo built for slow sipping rather than mixing, a sweeter leaning take on aged Jalisco tequila.
