Gordon & MacPhail, the Elgin house founded in 1895 and a long-standing Mortlach bottler, released this 53 Year Old: a small parcel of casks, a 1951 vintage, an outturn of 110 bottles. Mortlach is Speyside's great meaty malt, its 1823 Dufftown stillhouse using worm tubs and a 2.81 distillation that defies the region's lighter norm.

Across fifty-three years heavy evaporation and slow oxidation concentrated the rich, meaty spirit, leather and old-wood depth as the strength drifted lower.

At 42% it shows vanilla, cooked fruit and a savoury weight over the meaty Mortlach body. Mortlach at full weight.
