Douglas Laing, the Glasgow independent established in 1948, bottles this 11 Year Old, a 2004 from cask DL 10853, an outturn of 372 bottles. Mortlach, long the muscular heart of the Johnnie Walker blends, draws its meaty depth from low-copper worm tubs and a 2.81-times distillation regime.

Across eleven years in American oak, esterification got underway and the meaty spirit rounded, vanilla and light toffee folding in.

At 46.7% it shows vanilla, cooked fruit and a savoury weight framed by the dense Dufftown spirit. A meaty, muscular Mortlach.
