Description
McConnell's revives an old Belfast whiskey name, one that keeps the historic whisky spelling its label carried before the brand went quiet in the twentieth century. The modern liquid is distilled at the Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk, Co. Louth, and this 5 Years Old was bottled in 2020 at 42% for an event.
Five years in ex-American oak bourbon casks give the blend fresh orchard fruit, vanilla and a light chocolate sweetness, with citrus keeping it lively. It is a straightforward, well made young Irish whiskey in the Great Northern manner, clean spirit and honest cask work rather than mythology, and the slightly elevated strength lends it a touch more body than the standard 40% bottlings around it.
