Description
McConnell's is one of Belfast's revived whiskey names, a label first recorded in 1776 and brought back with stock distilled at the Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk, Co. Louth. This 5 Years Old carries a Cognac cask finish and was bottled at 46% for the European market.
The whiskey matured in ex-bourbon casks before the Cognac wood added its grapey, honeyed layer, so fresh fruit, citrus and vanilla pick up nutty new wood and a gentle warming richness. The five year age statement is worn openly, young whiskey shaped by its finishing cask rather than dressed up as something older, and the strength keeps the fruit and spice from fading early on the finish.
