Description
The sherry cask edition of McConnell's 5 Years Old takes the revived Belfast label's blend, distilled at the Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk, Co. Louth, through a finishing period in Oloroso casks after its ex-bourbon start. This bottling appeared in 2022 at 46% for an event release.
The Oloroso wood folds dried fruit, walnut and a honeyed, sherried depth into the vanilla and fresh new wood of the base whiskey, with the yeasty, bready note that young sherry finished Irish blends often show. At 46% it carries the extra cask weight comfortably, a step up in richness from the standard McConnell's without losing the easy Irish character underneath.
