A single cask El Salvador rum from Rum Artesanal, unsweetened and column distilled at 46.3 percent, dry and herbal with green apple, vanilla and roasted coconut leading into espresso and dark chocolate spice.
Description
This 2008 vintage from Licorera Cihuatan was selected and bottled by Rum Artesanal, the German house that works in the unsweetened full proof tradition. It is a single cask drawn from a 2008 distillation and aged nearly eleven years, a Spanish style column still rum that breaks from the usual soft sweetness of the category.
Distilled from molasses on a column still and matured in ex bourbon, it is bottled unsweetened at 46.3 percent. The result is unusually herbal and apple led for a Spanish style rum, with green Granny Smith brightness, vanilla and roasted coconut moving into a spicy finish of espresso, dark chocolate and tea. The body is on the lighter side and a touch thin, but the dryness and herbal lift make it a characterful, honest pour for anyone exploring drier non Jamaican styles without added sugar.
