Description
La Medida Tobala is a joven mezcal made from wild Tobala, Agave potatorum, gathered from junglelike terrain at around 1,900 metres and produced traditionally in San Dionisio Ocotepec, Tlacolula de Matamoros, Oaxaca. Tobala is small, slow growing and wild harvested, taking a decade or more to mature, which keeps these bottlings scarce. The La Medida label brings together more than forty Oaxacan producers under Julian Vidal Gomez Rodriguez.
Potatorum is prized for being floral, fruity and mineral, and this expression runs true to type. Expect juicy orchard fruit, a soft and persistent minerality and a hint of black pepper, with the pit roast adding only restrained smoke so the agave leads. Bottled unaged at 45% in a 200 ml format, it shows the delicate side of wild Oaxacan mezcal.
