Description
Kopke, founded in 1638 and the oldest of the Port houses, is a benchmark producer of aged Tawny. This 30 Years Old carries an average age of 30 years across its blend, drawing on Douro wines from many harvests that have each matured separately in oak casks before being married together.
Decades in small oak casks drive slow oxidation, the process that fades the wine to amber with green hues and transforms fresh fruit into dried fruit, honey and toasted nut. Evaporation over such a long span concentrates flavour and body, so the wine gains depth and a unctuous weight that a young Tawny cannot reach.
The nose is intense and complex, dried fruit balanced by vanilla and honey, and the palate is harmonious and concentrated with a superb enduring finish. It is a natural partner for foie gras, and works beautifully with toffee or chocolate desserts, walnut and goat cheese crostini, or simply on its own as a digestif.
