Description
Kopke, founded in 1638 and the oldest of the Port houses, built its reputation on aged Tawny, and this 10 Year Old comes from vineyards in the Douro's demarcated region planted mainly to Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cao. The label age reflects the average time the component wines have spent in wood.
Douro reds are fortified with grape spirit part way through fermentation, then matured oxidatively in seasoned oak casks. Over roughly ten years the wine loses its youthful red colour, taking on an amber rim and developing the caramel, nut and dried-fruit character that separates Tawny from the fresher Ruby styles. Blending across harvests keeps the house style consistent.
Expect a golden amber pour with aromas of fig, raisin and toasted almond lifted by honey and wood spice. The palate is smooth and rounded, running through toffee, caramel and marzipan into a warm, gently spiced finish. It works best lightly chilled as a digestif, alongside dried fruit and nuts, hard cheese or a plate of dark chocolate.
