Invergordon 42 Years Old 1973 Cask #13000000042 (Wilson & Morgan)

Founded in 1959, Invergordon makes grain whisky on a large scale for blending, so single grain bottlings under its own name are rare and come mostly from independent bottlers. This single cask was bottled by Wilson & Morgan, distilled in 1973, at 42 years old, for its Barrel Selection - Collector's Edition range. Single cask number 13000000042 yielded 221 bottles, released for Italy.

Invergordon is a grain distillery rather than a malt one, distilling a mash of maize, wheat and barley through tall continuous column stills to a light, high strength spirit. Matured in ex-Bourbon casks.

Bottled at its natural cask strength of 52%, without dilution, the ex-Bourbon wood gives vanillin for vanilla and oak lactones for coconut, with maltol for butterscotch. Recorded bottle notes run to a cereal mash note, seasoned oak, a faint plastic note and vanilla. Long maturation has layered tropical fruit and a buttery, waxy weight over the grain's natural sweetness.
