Description
Founded in 1959, Invergordon makes grain whisky on a large scale for blending, so single grain bottlings under its own name are rare and come mostly from independent bottlers. This single cask was bottled by Best Dram, distilled in 1986, at 35 years old. Single cask number 23656 yielded 241 bottles, released for Germany.
Invergordon runs column stills over fifty feet tall on a maize and wheat mash, producing the soft, sweet grain spirit that forms the base of Whyte & Mackay's blends. Matured in an Oloroso sherry cask.
Bottled at its natural cask strength of 48.8%, without dilution, the Oloroso wood adds dried fruit, with melanoidins reading as fig and raisin and tannins giving a walnut dryness. Recorded bottle notes run to kippery. Long maturation has layered tropical fruit and a buttery, waxy weight over the grain's natural sweetness.
