Description
This is the 2016 Reposado from Herradura's Coleccion de la Casa, made at Casa Herradura in Amatitan, the lowland Jalisco house that is credited with shaping the reposado style itself. It is built from 100% Blue Weber agave and natural yeast, twice distilled, and is the work of master distiller Maria Teresa Lara, one of few women leading a tequila house. The doubled maturation is the point.
The spirit first sits eleven months in medium American white oak, then spends a further two months in hand selected vintage port casks from Portugal's Douro Valley before bottling at 40%. The nose leans traditional reposado, caramel and vanilla over baked agave, with a thread of red pepper. The palate is heavier and savoury, black pepper, green onion and mixed herbs, before fruit driven by the port finish arrives, leaving redcurrant and a little strawberry behind the pepper.
