Cask #13337 from Chichibu Distillery in Saitama was distilled in 2014 and handed to The Whisky Exchange for bottling in 2022 after seven years in red wine wood. The Whisky Exchange has been an active partner in Chichibu's single cask programme, selecting individual casks for event releases that reach a specialist international audience.
Red wine maturation over seven years gives this Chichibu a distinct character compared to the distillery's more numerous Ex-Bourbon releases from the same vintage. Berry and ripe fruit notes from the wine wood frame Chichibu's orchard fruit new make, and the extended contact with red wine wood delivers a vinous softness and gentle tannic structure. At 59.5% it is one of the more restrained of the cask strength releases, accessible without losing the intensity expected from this distillery.
