Carrere Montebello Rhum Vieux 6 ans

Montebello is a traditional Guadeloupe distillery on Basse Terre, run by the Marsolle family and working from fresh pressed cane juice. This Rhum Vieux is a six year aged agricole from its column still, a stepping stone into mature Guadeloupe cane juice rum, bottled at an easy 42%.

The nose stays close to the cane with sugarcane, grass, lime and herbs, the palate adding wood and a herbal grassiness, the finish carrying oak, licorice and a touch of caramel. Ex bourbon ageing lends light sweetness and structure while the vegetal cane character remains clearly in view, giving an honest glimpse of the island style without heavy alcohol. Balanced and herbal rather than sweet, it drinks well neat for the agricole curious and works equally as a base for a vieux Ti Punch or cocktails.
