Carrere Montebello PURE (Brut de Colonne) Batch 1 2023

The PURE Brut de Colonne from Carrere, the Basse-Terre distillery behind Montebello in Guadeloupe, a 2023 white agricole bottled at the spirit's raw column strength of 79%. This is fresh-pressed cane juice taken straight off the still without reduction, unsweetened, about as uncompromising as a blanc can be.

For all its power it is built on clarity rather than aggression. The nose is intense and fresh, full of agricole and citrus with light melon, faint tobacco, sugar cane and spice. The palate is oily and intense with fresh agricole character, and the finish stays floral, warm, intense and grassy. Even at this strength the cane comes through clean and almost elegant, greedy and pure without harshness, though it plainly calls for water or a cocktail. Honest and unsweetened, it is a powerhouse white for the experienced, a single drop transforming a Ti' Punch, and a striking demonstration of what undiluted column agricole tastes like.
