A six year old Guadeloupe vieux from Carrere Montebello, cane-juice aged in ex-bourbon oak, vegetal and floral with apple, figs, coffee and a grassy cucumber finish, dry and shape-shifting in the glass at 42%.
Description
Carrere Montebello Rhum Vieux Agricole is an aged Guadeloupe agricole from the Carrere distillery, the home of Montebello on Basse-Terre, distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice. This is a six year old vieux, matured under Guadeloupe's IGP rather than the Martinique AOC but in the same French-island cane tradition.
The spirit comes off a column still and rests in ex-bourbon oak, producing a rum that notably shifts in the glass: first vegetal and grassy, then opening to apple, figs, flowers and a soft sweetness, with a coffee note appearing on the palate. The finish returns to the green side with grass and cucumber, staying dry throughout. It keeps a strong agricole identity, the wood adding depth rather than dominating. At 42% it is an accessible aged agricole that rewards time and air, drinking well neat once it has settled.
