A seven year old Montebello agricole finished after a Breton whisky collaboration, at 47.6%, balanced and gourmand with fresh cane, pear and baked apple over soft vanilla and a gentle oak touch, a relaxed rounded sipper.
Description
Part of Carrere's Montebello cask-finish collection, this La Rencontre is a 2015 Guadeloupe agricole carrying a Distillerie des Menhirs link, the Breton house behind France's first single malt. Seven years old at 47.6%, it brings a soft whisky-cask layer to a fresh cane-juice base.
The spirit is pressed from fresh sugarcane juice and aged in ex-bourbon oak before the finishing cask adds its mark. The nose is candied and gourmand, fresh cane delicacy laced with pear and baked apple under a veil of vanilla. The palate keeps that fresh cane and orchard-fruit sweetness with a vegetal edge, and the finish is smooth and fruity with a light tannic grip. The added-sugar status is not documented and the sweetness reads as fruit and oak rather than dosage. Round, balanced and easy-drinking, it suits a relaxed sipping session where its dessert-leaning fruit can take centre stage.
