Description
This is a Cameronbridge single grain, chosen and bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd, a 35 year old release distilled in 1984, from cask 19284 and bottled at 47.2%. Cameronbridge is a Lowland grain distillery in Fife, founded in 1824 by John Haig and now the largest distillery in Scotland. It is one of the largest distilleries in Europe, making well over a hundred million litres a year.
The spirit was run off the distillery's three column stills from a wheat mash, to build a soft, sweet grain character. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending coconut and vanilla. At this age it is rich and waxy, the sweet grain folded into a buttery, oily body. Time in oak deepens the toffee and crème brûlée notes of aged grain. It is among the largest distilleries in Europe, making well over a hundred million litres a year. John Haig's cousin Robert Stein invented the continuous still, and Cameronbridge was among the first to run one.
At a hearty 47.2% it carries real weight. The ex-Bourbon gives sweet vanilla and a buttery coconut. A butterscotch and a creamy oak lift it. It finishes clean, sweet and buttery. This is an aged single grain from Diageo's largest distillery.
