Distilled on 21 March 2008 and bottled on 24 November 2020, this 12 year old single malt from Bushmills was finished in Douro wine casks and released at 46.0 percent ABV with a limited outturn of approximately 474 bottles made exclusively for Portugal.

This release represents an earlier stage of maturation compared with longer-aged Causeway bottlings. After more than a decade in wood, the base spirit has developed sufficient structural framework from initial cask contact to carry additional influence from the Douro finish. At this age, spirit retains enough volatility and alcohol energy for secondary cask interaction to be effective without overwhelming the underlying profile. This balance between structural development and remaining youthful expression is what allows a Douro finish to impart character clearly rather than merely add sweetness or oak weight.

Douro wine casks bring wine-derived compounds into the whiskey’s profile that differ from fortified wine finishes. While Port comes from the same region, Douro casks used in whiskey finishing are more likely to reflect red table wine influence, contributing red fruit character, gentle wine tannin and subtle spice rather than the dense dried fruit typical of fortified finishes. These compounds dissolve into the spirit over time, reinforcing layered fruit complexity and oak structure without dominating the base profile.

On the nose, this release shows fresh and cooked fruit impressions leaning toward red currant and cherry rather than high-volatility citrus, accompanied by hints of honey, vanilla and light oak. The palate is balanced and expressive for its age, with fruit and gentle spice running alongside structural oak support and a clean alcohol presence that carries flavour without harshness. The finish is steady, with lingering fruit depth and spice that unfurl rather than disappear quickly.
