Description
Big Peat 33 Years Old is a blended malt Scotch from Douglas Laing, an all Islay vatting with Caol Ila at its core. The Big Peat label gathers Islay malts into one peaty vatting, with the cartoon fisherman on the front.
The Caol Ila within lends a clean, lemony Islay smoke rather than a heavy tarry one. A first fill sherry cask drove a deep, figgy, nutty character. The lighter style means the cask and the citrus speak alongside the peat. Its spirit also feeds blends such as Bell's and Black Bottle. Port Askaig is a tiny settlement on the rugged east coast of Islay. Much of the spirit leaves the island by sea to mature on the mainland. The clean, oily spirit takes cask flavour well while holding its citrus and smoke. Refill oak lets the maritime peat and lemon of the spirit lead the way. A clean smoke and a coastal salt define the distillery style.
At 47.2% without water it is rich and full. A coastal peat smoke runs through it, with lemon, brine and a soft oil over a sweet fruit. It is clean and coastal, the peat and lemon to the fore. A smoky, oily warmth lingers with lemon and salt. A characterful smoky blended malt Scotch.
