Description
Big Peat 10 Years Old is a Douglas Laing Islay blended malt built around peated malts, Port Ellen included. The blend draws the peated names of Islay together into a single smoky whole. The range has grown into a cult of its own among peat lovers.
Blended malt means malt from more than one distillery, in this case Islay's smoky houses. At 10 year old it shows real maturity, Port Ellen adds its elegant, citric smoke to the mix. A Japanese Mizunara oak cask lent sandalwood and incense to the smoke. Time in the cask rounds the spirit, the smoke settling into a soft, waxy depth. Douglas Laing has long specialised in the malts of the islands. A dram built for those who take their whisky smoky. The Port Ellen within ties it to one of Islay's lost legends. Smoke, salt and citrus run through its Islay character. It wears the big, coastal smoke of the island with pride.
At cask strength 48% it is muscular. A soft maritime smoke carries maritime salt and citrus, with a touch of vanilla and cream from the wood. Beneath the peat run lemon, wax and a mineral note. A waxy, gently medicinal finish lingers long. An assertive, coastal blended malt touched by Port Ellen smoke.
