A young single cask Mauritian rum from Fine Spirits, molasses-based and light with fruity, nutty and popcorn notes over caramel and vanilla, an honest but lean three year old bottled at 43%.
Description
A single cask from Fine Spirits under their Rum of the World label, drawn from an unnamed Mauritian distillery. Mauritius makes both cane-juice and molasses rum, and this one is molasses-based, a vintage 2018 aged three years in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at 43%.
The youth shows clearly. The nose is dominated by young wood with fruity notes, caramel and a curious popcorn edge. The palate is fruity and nutty with vanilla and a sweet impression, finishing on allspice, caramel and vanilla but running short and a little empty in the middle. It is honest about what it is, a light, young single cask that leans on its oak more than its spirit, with a fruity-sour thread that lingers. Added sugar is not declared and the sweetness reads as cask-derived. A straightforward, easygoing pour rather than a complex one, best for casual sipping.
