Description
Douglas Laing selected this Cameronbridge, a 25 year old distilled in 1990, from cask DL 10806 and bottled at 60.6%. The outturn was 282 bottles. Cameronbridge was founded in 1824 by John Haig, of the great Haig distilling family, in Fife. As well as grain whisky, it makes the neutral spirit for Gordon's and Tanqueray gin and Smirnoff vodka.
The spirit was made in continuous stills from wheat for a light spirit, for a light, sweet make of real purity. A refill American oak cask held it, building the sweet, oily grain character. By this age the sweet spirit rounds into vanilla, coconut and a soft oil. Light grain takes oak readily, the ex-Bourbon lending coconut and vanilla. The Haig distilling dynasty traces its roots in Scottish whisky back to the 1600s. The distillery sits at Windygates in the Kingdom of Fife, near the River Leven. Light grain spirit like this gains coconut and toffee from decades in active oak.
At its natural 60.6% it is concentrated. The ex-Bourbon gives coconut, vanilla and toffee. Beneath it run coconut, vanilla and a soft oil. Crème brûlée and oak draw out the close. This is the clean, sweet grain of Cameronbridge.
