Description
Single grain Cambus, an independent Cadenhead's bottling matured to 30 year old distilled in 1988 and bottled at 45.5%. The outturn was 258 bottles. Founded around 1806 by John Moubray, Cambus was a Lowland grain distillery that fell silent in 1993. It was one of the five grain distilleries that founded the Distillers Company Limited in 1877.
Distilled in continuous stills for a light, sweet grain spirit, building the gentle Cambus grain style. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending coconut and vanilla. Long ageing brings a deep coconut, toffee and a mellow, polished oak. Maturation in ex-Bourbon wood suits the light, sweet grain particularly well. A fire destroyed the distillery in 1914; it was rebuilt and resumed in the late 1930s. Cambus was once one of the largest grain distilleries in Scotland. Most surviving Cambus was distilled in the late 1980s and early 1990s, before the doors closed.
At an approachable 45.5% it is soft and balanced. The ex-Bourbon gives sweet vanilla and a buttery coconut. Beneath it run coconut, vanilla and a soft oil. Crème brûlée and oak draw out the close. This is a single grain from the lost Cambus distillery.
