Description
A Cambus single grain, selected and bottled by The Whiskyfind, a 28 year old single grain distilled in 1991, from cask 61974 and bottled at 62%. The outturn was 356 bottles. Cambus, a silent grain distillery on the River Devon, made whisky from about 1806 to 1993. Water came from the Lossburn Reservoir, the spirit drawn off two continuous Coffey stills.
Distilled continuously in two Coffey stills from a grain mash, giving a clean, mellow grain whisky. Maturation in a sherry cask laid dried fruit over the oily grain. Long ageing brings a deep coconut, toffee and a mellow, polished oak. Grain whisky like this rewards very long maturation, the wood adding most of the character. Closed in 1993, the site is now a Diageo cooperage beside the Blackgrange warehouses. The spirit was drawn off two continuous Coffey stills, the water from the Lossburn Reservoir. Single grain Cambus is rare, mostly from independent bottlers and the odd Diageo Special Release.
At cask strength 62% it is full bodied. The Oloroso brings dried fruit and a nutty depth over the sweet grain. Soft toffee and vanilla sit behind the sweetness. The close is soft, dessert sweet over oak. This is a rare single grain from a lost grain distillery.
