Wolfburn The Kylver Series – 2

This is release 2 of Wolfburn's Kylver Series, its single cask bottlings, named Uruz for a Norse rune. A 3 year old, bottled at 50%. Founded in 2013, Wolfburn is a small, hand run distillery at Thurso in Caithness. Wolfburn distils, matures and bottles all on its one small site at Thurso.

Distilled slowly on soft Wolf Burn water, giving the clean, fruity coastal spirit. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness to the fresh make. At a youthful age the fruit is lively and the malt clean. Refill oak lets the fresh, fruity distillery character lead. Most of the make is unpeated, with a lightly peated malt distilled since 2014 for a soft smoke. The core range runs Northland, Aurora, Morven and Langskip, names drawn from the far north. The Kylver Series gathers single casks named for the runes of an ancient Caithness stone. Water is drawn from the Wolf Burn, the stream that runs past the distillery to the sea.

At cask strength 50% it is muscular yet fresh. Apple, citrus and a clean malt, and the Oloroso lends raisin, walnut and a dried fruit richness. The texture is light and fresh, the fruit lifted by a coastal salt. The finish runs light, coastal and crisp. This is Wolfburn's clean, coastal Thurso single malt.
