Tobermory 27 Years Old 1995 Cask #1976 (Limited Whisky Ltd)

This is a Tobermory, from the independent bottler Limited Whisky Ltd, a 27 year old release from 1995, drawn from cask 1976 and bottled at 53.4%. Only 294 bottles were released. Tobermory is the unpeated single malt of Mull's only distillery, founded in 1798 in the island's painted harbour town. Burn Stewart revived the distillery in 1993, and Distell of South Africa bought it in 2013.

The spirit was distilled in the kinked copper stills for a fruity spirit, building the oily Tobermory style. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanilla beneath the fruit. At this age it is rich and oily, the fruit folded into a waxy, honeyed body. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the fruity, waxy core over time. The distillery's history is broken by long silences; its buildings once stored a local cheddar. Burn Stewart revived production in 1993, and Distell bought the distillery in 2013.

At a full 53.4% it is intense and layered. Honey, wax and a soft nut, and the refill bourbon lends a quiet vanilla. It is fruity and full, the oily spirit shining through. The finish runs fruity, nutty and warm. This is an unpeated malt from Mull's only distillery.
