Description
Bottled by Hunter Laing, this Tobermory matured to 21 year old from 1996, drawn from cask HL 14082 and bottled at 50%. A release of 272 bottles. Tobermory is the unpeated single malt of Mull's only distillery, founded in 1798 in the island's painted harbour town. The distillery was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair, a local kelp merchant, as the Ledaig distillery.
The spirit was worked through the boil ball stills for an oily, fruity make, for the waxy, fruity spirit Tobermory is known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, soft oak that lets the waxy fruit lead. Beyond twenty years the malt grows deep and waxy, honey, dried fruit and nut over old oak. Refill oak lets the fruity, waxy Tobermory character lead. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working. Tobermory has distilled in the island's harbour town since 1798.
At its natural 50% it is concentrated. A fruity, waxy sweetness, and the refill bourbon lends a quiet vanilla. Soft orchard fruit and wax sit behind the cask. It closes long, waxy and fruity. This is a waxy, fruity island single malt.
