Description
Glasgow Distillery SMWS Distillery G16 Rare Release Dark 'n' stormy crème brûlée / Thunderstorm in a beehive is a single grain Scotch, bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The Society bottles single casks under a code rather than a distillery name, at natural strength. Single grain is light and sweet, distilled in a continuous still rather than a pot still.
Grain whisky is distilled from cereals in column stills, giving a clean, high strength spirit. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak for a honeyed sweetness. The Society bottles its casks without filtration and at full strength. Its 1770 name recalls the old Glasgow Distillery at Dundashill, founded in 1770 and closed in 1902. Makar Gin came first, in 2014, and helped fund the return of whisky to the city. The first single malt casks were filled in 2015, the first whisky released in 2018. The distillery is known for an adventurous cask policy, from Cognac and Marsala to Port and Tequila.
At its natural 50% it is concentrated. Vanilla, coconut and a soft toffee run through it, light and sweet, with a creamy oak. A vanilla and a gentle spice give it depth. The finish is bright, spiced and warming. A light, sweet single grain Scotch.
