Big Peat The Whiskyburg Wittlich Edition #2, a Douglas Laing vatting of Islay malts, holds Port Ellen among its components. It is built to show the big, smoky heart of Islay in a single glass. It carries a piece of closed distillery Islay in every bottle.
Blended malt means malt from more than one distillery, in this case Islay's smoky houses. Built without an age statement, Port Ellen adds its elegant, citric smoke to the mix. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood holding back so the peat speaks. Refill ex-Bourbon oak, having given its sharpest notes to an earlier fill, lets the peat and the spirit lead. Douglas Laing has long specialised in the malts of the islands. A dram built for those who take their whisky smoky. The Port Ellen within ties it to one of Islay's lost legends. Smoke, salt and citrus run through its Islay character.
At its natural 56.8% it is rich and briny. Embers of Islay peat carries maritime salt and citrus, with a quiet sweetness from the refill cask. Beneath the peat run lemon, wax and a mineral note. A long, briny finish smoulders to the end. A bold Islay blended malt carrying a thread of legendary Port Ellen.
