Description
Big Peat Russian Edition is a Douglas Laing blended malt, an Islay vatting with Port Ellen among its malts. Big Peat marries the smoky malts of Islay into one bold, characterful dram. Douglas Laing built Big Peat as a tribute to the smoke of Islay.
A blended malt vats single malts from several distilleries, here the peated names of Islay. Built without an age statement, the Port Ellen component lends its refined, oily smoke. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood holding back so the peat speaks. The peat phenols fade only slowly, which is why even very old Port Ellen keeps its smoke. Vattings like this let the smoky malts of Islay shine together. The peat is the point here, drawn from Islay's smoky distilleries. Bottlings carrying closed distillery malt grow rarer each year. Douglas Laing has long specialised in the malts of the islands. A dram built for those who take their whisky smoky.
At a hearty 48% it carries real weight. Soft coconut and vanilla from the oak, while a refined peat reek carries oily lemon, brine and a lanolin wax. It is elegant and deep, the peat folded into the malt. The close is slow, soft peat over wax. A rich Islay dram threaded with rare Port Ellen.
