Description
Big Peat Feis Ile 2019, from Douglas Laing, vats Islay's smoky malts with Port Ellen at its core. It gathers Islay's smoky malts into a rich, coastal blended malt. Big Peat has appeared in countless editions for markets and festivals.
A blended malt vats single malts from several distilleries, here the peated names of Islay. Built without an age statement, the Port Ellen component lends its refined, oily smoke. An ex-Bourbon cask shaped it, soft refill oak that lets the smoke lead. Long, cool maturation in Islay warehouses lets the smoke knit slowly with the oak. Bottlings carrying closed distillery malt grow rarer each year. Douglas Laing has long specialised in the malts of the islands. A dram built for those who take their whisky smoky. The Port Ellen within ties it to one of Islay's lost legends. Smoke, salt and citrus run through its Islay character.
At a full 48% it is concentrated and oily. A gentle vanilla note, while an elegant, structured smoke carries brine, wax and a mineral edge. A lanolin wax and a coastal salinity give it real weight. The finish runs oily, saline and slow. A bold Islay blended malt carrying a thread of legendary Port Ellen.
