Big Peat Christmas Edition, an Islay blended malt at 53.7%, Port Ellen among its malts. Heavily peated, showing oily peat, brine and a waxy lemon. Soft embers over a waxy body. A relic of Islay’s most storied closure. Old, oily and quietly smoky. From the warehouses by the Port Ellen bay. An assertive, coastal blended malt touched by Port Ellen smoke.

Description
Big Peat Christmas Edition is a Douglas Laing Islay blended malt built around peated malts, Port Ellen included. The blend draws the peated names of Islay together into a single smoky whole. The range has grown into a cult of its own among peat lovers.
Blended malt means malt from more than one distillery, in this case Islay's smoky houses. Built without an age statement, Port Ellen adds its elegant, citric smoke to the mix. An American oak cask shaped it, lending only a light sweetness under the smoke. Time in the cask rounds the spirit, the smoke settling into a soft, waxy depth. Vattings like this let the smoky malts of Islay shine together. The peat is the point here, drawn from Islay's smoky distilleries. Bottlings carrying closed distillery malt grow rarer each year. Douglas Laing has long specialised in the malts of the islands.
At a natural 53.7% it is powerful and oily. Drifting Islay peat smoke carries salted citrus and a soft wax, with a thread of vanilla from the bourbon wood. Soft embers and brine sit behind the smoke. It fades on smoke, citrus and a saline tang. A big, smoky Islay vatting with closed distillery Port Ellen inside.
