Description
Big Peat A846 Feis Ile 2020 Edition, a Douglas Laing vatting of Islay malts, holds Port Ellen among its components. It is built to show the big, smoky heart of Islay in a single glass. It carries a piece of closed distillery Islay in every bottle.
Blended malt means malt from more than one distillery, in this case Islay's smoky houses. At 8 year old it shows real maturity, Port Ellen adds its elegant, citric smoke to the mix. Maturation in a refill ex-Bourbon barrel kept the malt lean and smoky. Refill ex-Bourbon oak, having given its sharpest notes to an earlier fill, lets the peat and the spirit lead. Douglas Laing has long specialised in the malts of the islands. A dram built for those who take their whisky smoky. The Port Ellen within ties it to one of Islay's lost legends. Smoke, salt and citrus run through its Islay character. It wears the big, coastal smoke of the island with pride.
At 46% it is soft, smoky and oily. Embers of Islay peat carries salted citrus and a soft wax, with a quiet sweetness from the refill cask. Soft embers and brine sit behind the smoke. A long, briny finish smoulders to the end. A bold Islay blended malt carrying a thread of legendary Port Ellen.
