Description
Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin, whose deep stocks include some of the oldest Mortlach in existence, released this 33 Year Old, a 1988 vintage, cask 4594, an outturn of 213 bottles. Mortlach is Speyside's great meaty malt, its 1823 Dufftown stillhouse using worm tubs and a 2.81 distillation that defies the region's lighter norm.
Across thirty-three years heavy evaporation and slow oxidation concentrated the robust Mortlach spirit, leather and old-wood depth as the strength drifted lower.
At 53.8% it shows honey, undiluted. The savoury Dufftown style.
