Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin, whose deep stocks include some of the oldest Mortlach in existence, released this 30 Year Old, a 1988 vintage, cask 4839, an outturn of 129 bottles. Mortlach's heavy, savoury style comes from worm-tub condensing and a part-triple distillation through the Wee Witchie, unchanged since 1897.

Thirty years in ex-Bourbon carried the oily, meaty spirit to a profound, savoury maturity, long oxidation bringing leather, beeswax, old wood and worn fruit.

At 48.8% it shows a savoury, struck-match note and honey, undiluted. A muscular Speyside malt.
