Description
Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin, whose deep stocks include some of the oldest Mortlach in existence, selected this bottling, from a 1936 vintage. Founded in Dufftown in 1823, Mortlach owes its rich, meaty weight to worm-tub condensers and the unusual 2.81 distillation devised by Alexander Cowie.
Ex-Bourbon maturation framed the oily, meaty spirit, the low-tannin oak lending vanilla over the savoury core as oxidation slowly began.
At 40% it shows vanilla, cooked fruit and a savoury weight over the oily Mortlach weight. A Beast of Dufftown.
