Cadenhead's, Scotland's oldest independent bottler, founded in 1842, released this 27 Year Old, a 1988 distillation, an outturn of 498 bottles. Mortlach's heavy, savoury style comes from worm-tub condensing and a part-triple distillation through the Wee Witchie, unchanged since 1897.

By twenty-seven years Mortlach's weighty make had turned dense and leathery in the sherry, oxidation drawing out fig, date, walnut and dark chocolate.

At 52.6% it shows a savoury, struck-match note, an oily texture, a nutty depth, old wood, chocolate and cooked fruit, undiluted. A meaty, muscular Mortlach.
