Old wood, leather, herbs and black tea with a tobacco finish, a 31 year single-cask Port Mourant from Rum Artesanal, matured in a port cask and bottled at a natural 50.1%, dry, polished and surprisingly gentle to sip.
Description
A Port Mourant from Germany's Rum Artesanal, bottlers in the unsweetened full-proof tradition, drawn off the double wooden pot still that is the icon and the heaviest of all the Guyanese stills. Distilled in 1989 and matured for more than thirty-one years, this single cask is continental ageing at its most refined.
The greenheart double pot still gives Port Mourant its weight, but three decades have settled that power into polished wood, leather, dried herbs and black tea rather than raw timber. A port cask adds quiet depth without sugar, the rum is unsweetened at 50.1%, and the finish runs long on tobacco, leather and a clean bitter edge. The caramel on the nose suggests sweetness the palate never delivers, which is much of its charm.
