Description
This Tobermory was selected and bottled by Feinkost Reifferscheid matured to 25 year old from 1995, drawn from cask 20025 and bottled at 57.5%. Tobermory, the unpeated malt of the Isle of Mull, comes from one of Scotland's oldest distilleries. The distillery was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair, a local kelp merchant, as the Ledaig distillery.
The spirit was run through the distillery's boil ball stills, to build a nutty, waxy, fruity character. A wine cask held it, layering fruit over the oily malt. Long ageing brings a deeper waxy, fruity character and a mellow oak. The waxy, oily spirit takes on cask character slowly and holds its texture well. A rare, more heavily peated make has appeared under the name Iona, after a neighbouring isle. In dry summers the distillery has paused when its hill loch ran low. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt.
At a full 57.5% it is intense and layered. A waxy, oily fruitiness, and the Rum cask brings brown sugar and a tropical lift. Beneath it run orchard fruit, wax and a soft nut. The close is long, fruit over a soft oak. This is the waxy, fruity malt of Mull.
