Description
This Tobermory was picked by Blackadder, aged 15 year old from 1994, drawn from cask 5104 and bottled at 59.7%. Just 236 bottles were filled. Made on the Isle of Mull, Tobermory is the unpeated single malt of the island's sole distillery. Ledaig, the old name kept for the peated malt, means safe haven in Gaelic.
It was worked through the boil ball stills for an oily, fruity make, for the waxy, fruity spirit Tobermory is known for. Maturation in sherry laid dried fruit over the fruit. By this age the oily spirit rounds into nutty fruit and a waxy depth. Refill oak lets the fruity, waxy Tobermory character lead. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working. Tobermory has distilled in the island's harbour town since 1798. The town of Tobermory was laid out by the British Fisheries Society a decade before the distillery came. The distillery's history is broken by long silences; its buildings once stored a local cheddar.
Undiluted at 59.7%, it is powerful. A fruity, waxy sweetness, and the Oloroso brings dried fruit, fig and a nutty depth. Soft orchard fruit and wax sit behind the cask. The close is long, fruit over a soft oak. This is a waxy, fruity island single malt.
