The Nectar Of The Daily Drams selects this 2018 Savanna from Réunion, a molasses-based rum aged four years in ex-bourbon and bottled at a vigorous cask strength of 60.8%. Savanna runs several rum families, and this is the molasses side of the house rather than its cane juice agricole.
Young and intense, it benefits from patience. First nosing leans hard on black licorice before opening into apricot, pineapple and floral notes. The palate turns to tea, pineapple, vanilla and flowers, with a tropical, herbal lift, while the finish brings milk chocolate, oak and a minty edge. A long rest in the glass smooths the youthful punch and coaxes out the fruit. For drinkers who enjoy characterful young Réunion rum at full strength, this offers plenty of tropical, herbal intensity, provided it is given time to breathe.
