A wild, high-proof Savanna single cask from Reunion at 63%, pushing intense apricot, mirabelle and plum against green olives, herbs and sharp acidity, vibrant, untamed and frankly divisive rather than easygoing.
Description
This Foundations release from The Nectar of the Daily Drams is a four year old Savanna from Reunion, bottled by the Belgian house The Nectar as a single cask at a forceful 63%. Savanna makes several very different families of rum, and the wild, stone-fruit-and-olive character here points to one of its more characterful, high-ester styles. It is a young, intense, full-proof spirit aged in ex-bourbon oak.
The nose is loud and unusual, all overripe apricot, mirabelle and plum tipping into chemical and overripe notes, with green olives, herbs and sharp acidity behind. The palate stays intense and sour, apricot and tropical fruit cut by olive brine, finishing on the same wild, briny edge. This is honestly not a smooth, easy pour; the strength is big and a little raw, asking for water. It rewards experienced drinkers who chase bold, thought-provoking rum and enjoy Savanna at its most untamed.
