Description
This 1770 Glasgow single malt, bottled at 46%. The Glasgow Distillery Company was founded in 2012 and revived single malt distilling in Glasgow after more than a century. It was the first single malt distillery to work in Glasgow since the old Glasgow Distillery at Dundashill closed in 1902.
The spirit was run through copper pot stills from peated malt, to build a smoky, ashy character over the fruit. A sherry cask wrapped the young spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. The casks here are very active, and on a young spirit they work fast, giving real depth in just a few years. The Glasgow Distillery Company was founded in 2012, the first malt distillery in Glasgow in over a century. Its 1770 name recalls the old Glasgow Distillery at Dundashill, founded in 1770 and closed in 1902. Makar Gin came first, in 2014, and helped fund the return of whisky to the city.
At 46% it is smooth and fruity. Smoke, ash and a fruity sweetness lead, and the Pedro Ximenez lends raisin, date and treacle, and the virgin oak gives vanilla, baking spice and a little coconut. Beneath it run apple, pear and a soft spice. It closes on a sweet wood smoke and warm spice. This is a young, smoky Glasgow single malt.
