Lagavulin Distiller’s Edition 2023

Lagavulin Distillers Edition 2023 is an annual double matured release that builds on the distillery’s core smoky style through a secondary cask finishing. The whisky is initially matured in American and European oak refill casks before undergoing a further maturation in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks alongside charred American oak casks with heavily toasted new oak ends, a finishing approach specific to this edition.

Earlier Distillers Edition bottlings were explicitly based on the 16 Year Old, but the 2023 release carries no age statement, with Diageo no longer specifying the age of the component whiskies. Despite this, the profile remains firmly aligned with mature Lagavulin character, favouring depth and integration over youth or sharpness. Bottled at 43 percent ABV, the focus is on balance rather than power.

On the nose, peat smoke is layered with dark sherry notes, raisins and toasted oak. The palate is full and rounded, showing dried fruit, honey, vanilla and malt sweetness alongside Lagavulin’s signature smoke and spice. The finish is long and warming, with lingering smoke, gentle sweetness and structured oak.
