Description
This 21 Years Old was a 2007 Special Release, distilled in 1985 and matured in Oloroso and European oak, an outturn of 6,642 bottles. The distillery dates from 1816, set in a sheltered bay on southern Islay.
Lagavulin runs its pear-shaped stills slowly for a heavy, peated spirit. Matured in Oloroso and European oak at full strength, two decades wrap the smoke in deep sherry.
At cask strength, 56.5%. Phenols and guaiacol carry the peat smoke, the Oloroso and European oak giving dried fruit with a walnut dryness. Tasting notes take in smoke, a medicinal edge, chocolate, citrus, a coal-gas note and tobacco. A deep sherried older Special Release.
