Description
Invergordon single grain is uncommon, the distillery's output largely feeding Whyte & Mackay blends rather than standalone bottlings. This release was bottled by Master of Malt, distilled in 1974, at 50 years old, for its Masterpiece range. The outturn was 296 bottles, released for Germany.
Invergordon is a grain distillery rather than a malt one, distilling a mash of maize, wheat and barley through tall continuous column stills to a light, high strength spirit. Matured in ex-Bourbon casks.
Bottled at 46.3%, the ex-Bourbon wood gives vanillin for vanilla and oak lactones for coconut, with maltol for butterscotch. Recorded bottle notes run to cocoa, citrus, a cooked vegetable note, honey, malt sweetness and seasoned oak. Decades in oak have pushed the light grain into waxy, tropical territory, with mango and pineapple from slow ester development.
